Short Blogging Break.

Saturdays and Sundays are set aside to spend with my wife and son, so no blog posts on those days.

Today, I'll be working a double.....sixteen hours. Someone on another shift has to take her husband to the doctor and needs today off (she's used up all her vacation days because of his medical problems). No time for a long post today.

Things should be back to normal Tuesday. Of course, I'll be off all day Wednesday. The woman I'm working for this morning has to "pay me back". This way she won't have an absence counted against her. Yeah, I know.....weird company rules.

HLI Statement on the Passing of Senator Edward Kennedy.

Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, President of Human Life International says it much better than I can, so I will paste his statement here. (the link to the original can be found here.)

Human Life International's Statement on the Passing of Senator Edward Kennedy

We must, as a matter of precept, pray for the salvation of heretical Catholics like Senator Edward Kennedy, but we do not have to praise him let alone extol him with the full honors of a public Catholic funeral and all the adulation that attends such an event. There was very little about Ted Kennedy's life that deserves admiration from a spiritual or moral point of view. He was probably the worst example of a Catholic statesman that one can think of. When all is said and done, he has distorted the concept of what it means to be a Catholic in public life more than anyone else in leadership today.

Obviously we don't know the state of Senator Edward Kennedy's soul upon death. We don't pretend to. We are told by the family that he had the opportunity to confess his sins before a priest, and his priest has said publicly he was "at peace" when he died. For that we are grateful. But it is one thing to confess one's sins and for these matters to be kept, rightfully, private. It is another thing entirely for one who so consistently and publicly advocated for the destruction of unborn human beings to depart the stage without a public repudiation of these views, a public confession, as it were.

It is up to God to judge Senator Kennedy's soul. We, as rational persons, must judge his actions, and his actions were not at all in line with one who values and carefully applies Church teaching on weighty matters. Ted Kennedy's positions on a variety of issues have been a grave scandal for decades, and to honor this "catholic" champion of the culture of death with a Catholic funeral is unjust to those who have actually paid the price of fidelity. We now find out that President Obama will eulogize the Senator at his funeral, an indignity which, following on the heels of the Notre Dame fiasco, leaves faithful Catholics feeling sullied, desecrated and dehumanized by men who seem to look for opportunities to slap the Church in the face and do so with impunity simply because they have positions of power.

It is not enough for Kennedy to have been a "great guy behind the scenes" as we have seen him referred to even by his political opponents. It is also not praiseworthy to put a Catholic rhetorical veneer on his leftist politics that did nothing to advance true justice as the Church sees it or to advance the peace of Christ in this world. Every indication of Senator Kennedy's career, every public appearance, every sound bite showed an acerbic, divisive and partisan political hack for whom party politics were much more infallible than Church doctrines. Whatever one's political affiliation, if one is only "Catholic" to the extent that his faith rhymes with his party line, then his Catholicism is a fraud.

As the Scriptures remind us, there is a time for everything under the sun. This, now, is the time for honesty about our Faith and about those who are called to express it in the public forum. If we do not remind ourselves of the necessity of public confession for public sins such as Senator Kennedy was guilty of, then we are negligent in our embrace of the Faith and we are part of the problem. As Pope Benedict has reminded us recently, charity without truth can easily become mere sentimentality, and we must not fall into that error. A Catholic show of charity for the family must not eclipse the truth that is required of all with eyes to see and ears to hear.

Senator Kennedy needs to be sent to the afterlife with a private, family-only funeral and the prayers of the Church for the salvation of his immortal soul. He will not be missed by the unborn who he betrayed time and time again, nor by the rest of us who are laboring to undo the scandalous example of Catholicism that he gave to three generations of Americans.

Sincerely,

Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer,
President, Human Life International

Anonymous Bloggers.

OK, I admit it; I spend a great deal of time on the Internet.
Most of that time is spent reading blogs and professional op-ed pieces.

I do try to keep up on the latest news, but somehow, I'd missed the story of Liskula Cohen versus Rosemary Port. I still wouldn't have known about the two if I hadn't read Maureen Dowd's column in the New York Times and Kathleen Parker's column in the Washington Post.

For those of you who are - like I was just hours ago - unaware of who Liskula Cohen is, she is a professional model who has been the target of an anonymous blogger. The blogger had used her blog, Skanks in NYC, to defame Ms. Cohen by calling the Vogue model a "skank" and "ho" on more than one occasion.

Cohen sued Google for the identity of the blogger....one Rosemary Port (seen in photo).
Now, Port is, of course, suing Google as well.

Generally, I don't have a very high opinion of anonymous bloggers. There are exceptions to that, which I'll get to later. I've had a few run ins with anonymous folks leaving comments on this blog. I've gone into that in my Comment Policy.

As a rule, far too many anonymous bloggers use their anonymity to insult those they don't like with a ferocity and vulgarity that's really uncalled for. I've given up reading quite a few blogs for that very reason.

Of course, there are some bloggers who like to use the same sort of tactic on their enemies, all the while having no problem identifying themselves. Former Rome News Tribune writer Stacy McCain comes to mind.

As I said, there are anonymous bloggers who are the rare exceptions. LarryD of actsoftheapostasy is such a blogger. This speaks highly of Larry and his strong Catholic principles. Larry has a way of using humor to criticize without stooping to hateful words.

Miracle Cure in Lourdes.

Antonia Raco, of a village near Potenzahas,Italy, has been confined to a wheelchair for four years due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

According to a wikipedia article on the disease;

Eventually people with ALS will not be able to stand or walk, get in or out of bed on their own, or use their hands and arms. In later stages of the disease, individuals have difficulty breathing as the muscles of the respiratory system weaken. Although ventilation support can ease problems with breathing and prolong survival, it does not affect the progression of ALS. Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within 3 to 5 years from the onset of symptoms.

Raco is different, however.

After having traveled to the shrine in Lourdes, France this past August 5th, Raco has abandoned her wheelchair and has even "gone for a run".
She said, ''I felt a voice encouraging me and a strong pain in my legs'', while bathing in the waters at Lourdes.

She will be examined by specialist Adriano Chio - who has been treating her since 2006 - at Molinette Hospital in Turin Italy.

Videos of Raco, at home, walking around her house after the miracle can be found here and here.
The videos are in Italian, but interesting, never-the-less.

My Old Friend.

While thinking of a way of best describing my old friend and our current relationship, my opinion of him can best be summed up by a quote from Maugham's masterpiece Of Human Bondage :
"Like all weak men he laid an exaggerated stress on not changing one's mind."

When my old friend and I met, it was the early 1970's. We were "avant garde" and "revolutionary" and like all "non-conformists" we were generally like everyone else our age.

Our minds were molded by the likes of John Lennon. We wore our hair long, we had holes in our jeans and rode around in VW vans and beetles.

We both rejected the religion of our ancestors for the religion that advocates respect for one's ancestors.....Buddhism. I suspect our motivations for exploring Buddhist thought were quite different. His calling himself Buddhist was motivated more by his dislike of all things American. His Liberalism exacerbated his disdain for the country and our culture. Over the years, he's read countless books on the religion but hasn't taken the first step in actually practicing it in his daily life. He may protest that he is a Buddhist, but his actions prove him to be a follower of that modern religion of many "baby-boomers".....Liberalism.

My reasons for studying Buddhism so many years ago was an overwhelming desire to understand the reason behind this veil of tears. In addition to reading books on the subject, I attempted to live my life accordingly.
It might very well seem odd to many, but it was this attempt to meditate and live life as Buddha taught that eventually lead me to reject Buddhism and return to the Catholic Church. Not being afraid to get my feet wet, I jumped into the water, head first, and that has lead me to change my way of thinking and my way of living.

Even though we now have completely different world views, I can still consider him my friend. I'm sure he does not hold that view.

I've rejected the pro-abortion, anti-marriage, "open minded" Liberal cult. I have rejected Barack Obama and have committed the unforgivable sin of having voted for a Republican. Although he will speak politely in phone conversations, he will not accept invitations to have dinner with my wife and me. He doesn't openly say no; he has to check with his wife to see if they have a previous engagement.

In the end, I know he will not call back to let me know if they can make it. There will be no phone call and no knock at the door.

I can accept that we no longer see eye to eye. I believe - in spite of that - that he and I can still be friends. Obviously, he and his wife disagree with me on that idea as well.

The Anti-Muffin Award.

With blogging - like everything else- it's nice to be appreciated. Heaven knows I'm not going to get rich doing this.
OK.....two of my blogs [Penpal Website of the Week and Internet Dating Websites] bring in a wee bit of money from Google adsense ads, but I won't be quitting my day job any time soon (losing my day job due to Obamanomics is another matter altogether).

So naturally, I was flattered when I received the much coveted Anti-Muffin Award from LarryD of Acts of the Apostasy.

LarryD was awarded his Anti-Muffin by Joe of St. Theresa, who received his from Catholic Nerd Writer who received hers from Rose in Bloom who started it all. Rose came up with the Anti-Muffin after reading "Meet The Austins" by Madeline L'Engle.
According to characters in the book, a lot of folks want to be like everyone else...like a row of muffins. The book inspired Rose in Bloom to "create a blogging award for those bloggers out there who are decidedly 'Anti-Muffins'. Bloggers who promote what they believe without hesitation and without fear of possible negative feedback. Bloggers who don't conform to the world's standards".

I guess that's another way of saying that I write about whatever crosses my mind without regard as to whether or not anyone else likes what I have to say. I'll take that as a compliment.

Now, I'm obliged to pass on the award to other deserving bloggers. If you've been left off my list, it's not necessarily because I think you're a muffin....it's because, huh, LarryD assured me that he was going to give you the award.

I have no idea if Mary Ann Kreitzer of Les Femmes- the Truth has ever read my blog, so she may have no clue that I'm giving her the Anti Muffin. I can't think of anyone who deserves it more. She certainly says what she believes "without fear of negative feedback".

Then comes Lizette of Between the Shubbery. It may be difficult for some to handle the youthful angst of many of her posts, but she is quite the writer.

Last, but certainly not least, comes Dom of Village Idiot Savant. While Dom might humbly protest that his posts are more mundane than substantial, he doesn't bite his tongue when it comes to Filipino politics.

Yuengling Traditional Lager.

I'm not the beer drinker I once was.In my younger days (should I say younger daze?) the issue was quantity, not quality.
The object was to consume mass quantities and not be too concerned over taste. After all, after so many, they all taste pretty much taste the same.

Those days are gone. No brewery is going to make a fortune off the amount I drink. Now a days it's just one or two every once in a while.

Saturday afternoon, while at the store getting ice and soft drinks for a going away get-together for a friend, I decided to pick up a six-pack of beer for later. I wanted something different. The last beer I had was furnished by one of the guys who had gathered at the house - while our wives had a jewelry party. His beer of choice was Bud Light Lime.....far and away the worst tasting whiz I've ever had the misfortune to drink. I sure as heck was not going to pick up that.

So, here I am at the IGA and I'm intrigued by the name and label of a beer that is unknown to me.
It was Yuengling Traditional Lager. The label has a bald eagle on the front and claims to be made by America's oldest brewery.

OK, I'll give it a shot, I thought.

I have to say it's pretty good. I did a web search on Yuengling after drinking one Saturday evening. I couldn't understand how a beer this good could be made by the country's oldest brewery and yet be completely unknown to me.

The wikipedia article explains that. The original brewery is in Pennsylvania and their beer is not distributed nation wide. It was only made available in certain parts of the southern US after the company purchased a Stroh's plant in Tampa Florida ten years ago. It's only been on sale in Georgia less than a year.

As for the name. Well, that's a odd story in itself. The first owner, David G. Jüngling immigrated to the United States in 1823. For reasons unknown to me, he seemed to think Yuengling (pronounced YING-ling) was a more appropriate Americanized spelling. Go figure.

If the taste of a good traditional lager isn't enough to get you to try it, the fact that it is still American owned might tip the scales. Good taste, American owned, non-union. You can't beat it.

The SPLC versus Lou Dobbs.

As readers of my blog - D'offus of the Big-Doofus- know, I have used Barack Obama's birth certificate as a punchline occasionally. [see:My Birthday Cake].

This does not mean, however, that I put any credence in the theories and speculations of the, so-called, "birthers". As much as I wish Obama was not President of the United States, I have no reason to believe he was not born in Hawaii.

I haven't watched CNN in quite a long time and, until recently, was not aware of Lou Dobbs' opinion on the Obama birth certificate controversy. Radio talk show host, Neal Boortz mentioned Dobbs not long ago and I searched the Internet and found a video clip of Dobbs talking about it.

From what I gathered from the clip, Dobbs says he believes Obama was born in the US, but that he does not understand why the President doesn't present his birth certificate and put an end to this foolishness.

Because of this, Dobbs has been labeled a racist bigot by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
SPLC president, Richard Cohen has gone so far as to ask CNN to remove Dobbs for the air for his "conspiracy-mongering" and his peddling in racist propaganda.

Of course, Cohen says that "None of this is about censorship or infringing on Dobbs’ First Amendment rights."

Of course not.

The comments following Cohen's statement on the SPLC website speak volumes about the Liberal mind-set.
Folks who agree with Cohen say things like,
"We should call Fox News the Clan News and conservative talk radio like Rush’s Clan Radio."
"My husband and I have switched to MSNBC. We could not take CNN any more.Don’t stop with Lou Dobbs. What about zombie Larry King?"
"We are so over this whole birth certificate thing. We have so many issues to confront. Why do we not go back and care to prosecute GWB for his war crimes?"
And....
"I understand the concern but good grief to go onto Fox News to say anything about racist comments is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Lou Dobbs is a baby Jesus compared to the hate that Fox News and Bill O’reilly spews."

The Left has only one response to any argument......anyone who disagrees with the Left is a racist who spews forth hate speech.
What a pathetic group of losers.

Two Witch Doctors.

Thanks to a recent teaching moment, we learn that it is perfectly within your rights as an American citizen to raise your voice and scream at a police officer.

However, according to a recent op/ed piece in USAToday - written by speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and House Majority leader, Steny Hoyer - if you raise your voice in protest to a US congressman at a town hall meeting, you are, quite simply, un- American:

"These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades."

If you are opposed to the president's health care reform health insurance reform not only are you un-American but, according to Cynthia Tucker of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman you are.....are you ready......racist.

A recent story -Conservative Activist Forwards Racist Pic Showing Obama As Witch Doctor- does seem to back up this notion of racism.

I do have to ask the question.....how does the photo of George Bush as a witchdoctor fit into this "protesters are racists" scenario ?

Killing Fire Ants.

I know that many of my readers live outside the southern United States. Most of you reading this do not have first hand experience with fire ants. Consider yourself very, very fortunate.

Like a lot of the pests living down here, the fire ant is not native to the United States. It is generally accepted by scientists that the ant arrived in the 1930's. Cargo ships from South America, using soil as ballast, are believed to have accidentally left colonies of the fire ant off Mobile, Alabama.

The fire ants have spread to nearly all the southern states.

The ants are very aggressive. Whenever their mound is disturbed, they will attack anything with a vengeance. Once bitten, you know immediately why these creatures from Hell are called fire ants.

I recently discovered a bed of fire ants in the front yard. I've had enough experience with the ant to know what will and will not kill them. Not every insecticide going by the name "fire ant killer" is what it is claimed to be. The only commercially available poison that I've had any success with is a product called Orthene. Trust me, it works.

When I found this particular mound, I went to purchase a can of Orthene at Lowe's. I hadn't had reason to buy any in a long time and the price at Lowe's seemed a bit high to me. I decided pick up a can at Walmart instead.

When I got to the garden center at Walmart, I saw that their price was more than a dollar a can higher than Lowe's price. Cheapskate that I am, I decided to buy the Orthene at Lowe's after all. However, it was Sunday and Lowe's had already closed for the evening. I'd just wait. It was only one small mound.

A few days had passed and I had put off going to Lowe's. The mound had gotten bigger after the rains. By now, two smaller mounds had also popped up.

Speedy action was called for. I did the old time, tried and true, environmentally unfriendly method of fire ant control. I poured gasoline on the three mounds.

Now the ants are gone. There are three spots in the yard where the gasoline killed the grass growing around the mounds. I know the green police (who have never been bitten by fire ants) will curse me.....and even pour gasoline on me, if they could.

The spots can be "reclaimed" in time. I can make up for the environmental "damage" I've done and I don't regret my actions one bit.

Protesters beaten by Sudanese Police.

In Khartoum, Sudan, Lubna Hussein - along with 12 other Muslim women - was arrested on July 3 for violating an Islamic dress code. The 13 women were wearing trousers in public.

Ten of the women plead guilty and were given 10 lashes each and a fine of 250 Sudanese pounds (about $120).

Hussein and two other women decided to take the case to court......thereby risking being given 40 lashes. According to AP reports, she said, "I am not afraid of flogging. ... It's not about flogging. It's not about my innocence. It's about changing the law."

Tuesday, about fifty protesters supporting Hussein were tear-gassed and beaten by Sudanese police outside the courthouse where the trial is being held.

Witnesses have reported that police wielding batons beat up one of Hussein's lawyers.

Another example of the "religion of peace" in action.

Blocking Faith, Freezing Charity.

Following the tragedies of Sept. 11, 2001, it was discovered that a number of Muslims charities had been funneling monies to Islamic terrorist organizations.
On September 24, 2001, President Bush announced that, in “a strike on the financial foundation of the global terror network,” he had taken executive action, to expand the Treasury Department’s authority to freeze the assets of organizations it considered to be terrorist organizations.

As this article shows [Leader of a Georgia Mosque Pleads Guilty to Aiding Hamas ] the crime of using Muslim charities to fund terrorist groups was even happening here in sleepy Rome, GA.

Now, a report written by the ACLU documents "the consequence of U.S. government actions on American Muslims' exercise of their right to profess and practice their religion through charitable giving."

According to the report;
"The terrorism financing laws provide executive branch officials with practically unfettered discretion in targeting groups for designation as terrorist organizations, and the federal government’s enforcement of terrorism financing laws has disproportionately affected Muslim charities. Of nine U.S.-based charities whose assets have been seized by the Department of Treasury, seven are Muslim charities, and two are Tamil charities that provided humanitarian aid in Sri Lanka. In the majority of these cases, the government has not brought charges; only three designated U.S.-based Muslim charities have faced criminal prosecution, and only one has been convicted."

Also, this;
"The government’s actions have chilled American Muslims’ free and full exercise of their religion through charitable giving, or Zakat. Zakat is one of the core “five pillars” of Islam and a religious obligation for all observant Muslims. In interviews with American Muslim donors, the ACLU documented a pervasive fear that they may be arrested, prosecuted, targeted for law enforcement interviews, subpoenaed, deported, or denied citizenship or a green card because of charitable donations made in fulfillment of their sacred duty to give Zakat (charity or alms). Many American Muslims reported that the climate of fear has made it impossible for them to fulfill their religious obligation to give Zakat in accordance with their faith and to associate with fellow Muslims. The United States has long been regarded as a beacon of religious freedom, and yet U.S. terrorism financing laws and policies developed under the Bush administration are inhibiting American Muslims’ ability to freely and fully practice their religion."

I'm sure many reading this will have little sympathy for Muslims or Muslim charities. However, I see in this a potential for the Obama administration to harass and intimidate pro-life charities in the US. If the Treasury Dept. can designate charitable organizations as terrorist without allegations of criminal wrongdoing, how long will it be before the government sees a "connection" between pro-life charities and acts of "terror" such as the killing of abortionist George Tiller?
